USTAD AMINUL HAQUE is a reputed international performer, musician and teacher. With over 40 years of experience, he has devoted his life to singing and teaching Hindustani Classical Music (including Khayal, Thumri and Dhrupad), Ghazals and Film songs in both Hindi and Bengali. In addition to vocal training, he teaches Harmonium, Tabla and theory of Indian music.

A Lifetime of musical achievement

Originally from Bangladesh, Ustad was drawn to music from an early age. Gaining admission to the esteemed Chhayanaut Sangeet Vidyatan (Bengali: ছায়ানট), an institution devoted to mastery of Bengali culture, he learned under the tutelage of several maestros of his generation, including Ustad Shri Mithun De, Ustad Phool Muhammad, Smt. Anjali Roy and Sohrab Hossain. His talent quickly realised, he was recognised by the Indian Government for his musical prowess - where he was awarded the Indian Government Scholarship to study a Masters of Music at the famous Maharaja Syajirao University of Baroda in Gujarat, India.

Learning from the masters

In his new surroundings, he began a three year tuteluge under Padmabhusan award recipient Smt. Kishori Amonkar, learning the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana style. Rubbing shoulders with other contemporaries of his age, he studied several styles of subcontinent music. Here he studied under Shri Laxmikant Bapat (a disciple of Bharat Ratna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi) in the Kirana gharana style. Additionally, he learned the Bhindi Bazar style of Ustad Aman Ali Khan under the tutelage of Shri Dwarkanath Bhonsle and Prof. Basant Rao Ranade. After years of intense training, Ustad Aminul Haque graduated with a Bachelors of Music degree (Maharaja Syajirao University of Baroda), a Masters of Music degree (Maharaja Syajirao University of Baroda), an Associate of Music Diploma in Tabla (University of Bombay). He received an additional scholarship from the Ford Foundation and arranged by the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, to study Taal, Laykari and Bolbat under Ustad Phool Mohammad for three years. Since emigrating to Australia, he has received a Diploma in Music Teaching.

PRofessional performing

Returning to Bangladesh, Ustad Aminul Haque became a Grade A Radio and Television artist, whilst also performing public events prolifically. He produced and released a Nazrul (Sufi poetry in Bengali) album in 1990, releasing an additional seven albums by 2008 spanning the genres of Nazrul, Khayal, Thumri, Modern, Old Modern and film songs. Many of his own composistions have been sung by notable artists, including Haimonti Shukla and Indrani Sen of Kolkata. Since emigrating to Australia, he has performed since 2004 to delighting audiences across the country.

TEACHING THE NEXT GENERATION

Ustad Aminul Haque has continually taught students since graduating with his Masters of Music in 1990. He has taught at several well-known institutions in Bangladesh including the Bulbul Academy of Fine Arts (BAFA), Sangeet Bhaban, Government Music College and Dhaka University. Since emigrating to Australia he started the Raga Music School in Melbourne, whilst also founding the musical and cultural organisation Gharana Music Circle - it's purpose to promote Bangla, Hindi and subcontinental music in Melbourne with regular performance slots for students and community members alike.
